EDII - Equality, Diversity, Inclusion & Interculturalism
Gender & Identity
LGBT stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender and these terms, as well as heterosexual, are used to describe sexual orientation or gender identity. The inclusion of staff and students of all sexual orientations and gender identities is important to MIC as demonstrated by our LGBTQI+ Staff Network, Gender Diversity Training opportunities, membership of the Gender Identity & Expression Equality Champion Network and more.
Pride on Campus
July 2020 marked a momentous occasion for MIC when the Pride flag was raised for the first time on campus to celebrate both Limerick and Tipperary Pride weeks. We proudly flew the flag in solidarity with our LGBTQ staff and students. We are committed to being allies, supporting the LGBTQ community and celebrating the diversity of all students and staff.
Each year, we now mark Pride in different ways. We marked Pride 2021 with a look at the history and meaning of Pride in Ireland and across the globe. This interactive session with ShoutOut was designed to give participants a close understanding of Pride and to explore the valuable role of allies and LGBTQ+ folks alike in supporting the ongoing struggle for equality, all around the world.
Pride 2022 was no different as staff and MISU representatives gathered in July for the annual flag-raising again.
In 2023, members of our staff LGBTQI+ network took part in the Limerick Pride Parade with colleagues from the TUS staff network.
The EDII Office collaborates with MISU on events during the annual Student Pride week in the Autumn semester.
The rainbow colours have been painted on two pedestrian crossings at the MIC Limerick campus to mark Pride Month 2023.
The initiative is the result of a collaborative effort between MIC's LGBTQI Staff Network and the EDII Office.
