Mary Immaculate College is saddened to learn of the passing of Most Rev. Donal Murray, who served as Chairperson of the MIC Board of Trustees and An tÚdarás Rialaithe from 1996 to 2009.
Bishop Murray was born in Dublin in 1940, attended Blackrock College, Dublin, obtained his BA and Masters in Philosophy at UCD, his B. Div. at Maynooth and his License and Doctorate in Theology at the University of St Thomas, Rome. He was ordained as a priest in 1966.
He lectured extensively in theology and ethical issues, beginning in Mater Dei Institute of Education in 1969 and became Professor of Moral Theology at Clonliffe College in 1970. In addition to the above positions, from 1973 to 1982 he lectured on Cathechetics in UCD, and from 1978 to 1982, he lectured in Medical Ethics in the same institution.
Bishop Murray also authored three books and numerous articles, booklets and in the areas of theology, ethics and social issues.

A volume of essays on the regional history of the mid-west has been written in honour of Dr Liam Irwin, the former Head of the Department of History at Mary Immaculate College.
Co-authored by current MIC History Department lecturer Dr Catherine Swift, the book was launched last week by Bishop Emeritus John Fleming. Limestone and River: Essays on Thomond history in honour of Liam is a series of essays on the history of Limerick city and the surrounding areas, put together by friends and admirers of Liam during his 40 year tenure as a leading figure within the Thomond Archaeological and History Society (TAHS).
The book was in the works for several years after being delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Alongside Catherine, the book was co-authored by historians, Brian Hodkinson and Tom Donovan.
Limerick Campus: There are two book return boxes - one outside the library and one on the ground floor of the Foundation Building. The one in the Foundation Building is under the stairs - ask at Main Reception for directions. You can use these to return books when the library is closed. Please note, do not return 4hr loans into either of the boxes.
FemFest 2025 at Mary Immaculate College (MIC) welcomed Booker Prize winning author, Bernardine Evaristo, to the College this week where an audience of 250 witnessed a fascinating live conversation covering topics including growing up, her family and Irish connections, race and racism, finding her tribe in theatre, how her writing has evolved and how winning Britain’s most prestigious literary prize in 2019 changed her life. The author was interviewed by award-winning broadcaster and journalist, Ciana Campbell, at MIC Limerick. As well as a lively questions and answers session, she also read from her novel Girl, Woman, Other, which won the Booker Prize 2019. She was the first black woman and black British person to win it in its 50-year history.
Learn how to borrow, renew, and return materials at MIC libraries. All students can borrow in both MIC Limerick and MIC Thurles. Periodicals, Theses and Reference books (blue dots on spine) cannot be borrowed. There is also a reciprocal borrowing arrangement with UL Library.
Mary Immaculate College School of Education will host the launch of a national research report; 'Bonus Territory - The Shifting Landscape of Higher Level Senior Cycle Mathematics (2010-2024)', at MIC Thurles on Friday 16 May 2025 at 1pm.
Twenty-eight teachers from public schools in Brazil travelled to Ireland this week to complete a postgraduate diploma in education leadership and management at Mary Immaculate College (MIC). The educators participated in a selection process earlier this year, run by CAPES federal funding agency in Brazil, and will have all of their costs covered by the Brazilian government during their nine month stay in Ireland.
