Mary Immaculate College (MIC) receiving a second bronze Athena Swan Institution Award today (4 April) is “a testament to the commitment and collegiality of a whole institutional approach that has engaged the entire staff and student community” said Professor Lorraine McIlrath, Director of Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and Interculturalism (EDII) at MIC.
The renewal of the prestigious designation—first achieved in 2019—represents another key milestone and recognition of MIC’s commitment to advancing gender equality and intersectionality.
“Applying for the renewal of the Athena Swan has been a process of critical self-reflection of the culture and progress at Mary Immaculate College, and it is the result of an extensive self-assessment process. Despite the pandemic and post-pandemic periods, our commitment to Athena SWAN and Actions set in our Bronze Award in 2019 have been realised,” outlined Prof. McIlrath.
Mary Immaculate College (MIC) has been awarded €1.5 million euro in Erasmus Funding in order to develop a European Teaching Academy in Digital Leadership in Education. The programme, known as IDEAL Futures (Integrated Digital Educational Leaderships for the Future) is one of sixteen teacher academy projects to be selected for funding this year.

The scholarship programme, which is awarded for the second time this year, aims to offer financial support for those seeking international protection and includes a full fee waiver and an annual stipend of €3,000.
The two successful applicants—both from Afghanistan—are Farahnaz Haidary who is pursuing an M Ed in Education for Human Rights and Equality and Ahmad Shah Amadhi who is studying for a Masters in Applied Linguistics. Edward, another recipient from 2023, is entering Year Two of his doctorate, a Structured PhD in Applied Linguistics, and will also continue to be supported.

Inspire the next generation and teach is the key message of the Mary Immaculate College (MIC) pre-CAO Change of Mind deadline campaign highlighting the positive impact male teachers have had on, in particular, the lives of male students and as a result these students’ interest in pursuing primary school teaching as a career. The campaign is set against a backdrop of the current low levels of males teaching at primary school level in Ireland, with official Department of Education statistics putting it at just 20%.

‘The Way We Left’ was the theme of a special Africa Day event held at Mary Immaculate College (MIC) recently. Organised to coincide with wider international celebrations, the event was unique locally as it focused on an academic exploration of Africa, its culture, and the experiences of those who have arrived in Ireland from Africa.
