Mary Immaculate College offers a three-year Bachelor of Education degree (B Ed)
The beginning of the academic year 1974–75 marked the inauguration of the degree course.
This involved the setting-up of nine academic departments: Education, English, French, Irish, Geography, History, Mathematics, Philosophy, and Music. First-year students were required to take education, Irish and two other academic subjects from the range offered. In second and third years, students were required to study education and one of the academic subjects passed in the first-year university examination. The course in education comprised theoretical, professional and practical components. The theoretical component included philosophy, history, psychology, sociology of education and curriculum theory. The professional area embodied general methodology of teaching and specific methodologies of teaching of the various subjects on the primary school curriculum while the practical aspect of education comprised practice of teaching under the direction of staff members.
