The Flight of the Wild Geese will be remembered and the long-standing friendship between Ireland and France will be celebrated in Limerick this weekend at this year’s Limerick Bastille Day Wild Geese Festival. Held between 15 and 17 July, the Festival’s busy schedule of free events includes lectures, historical re-enactments, games, music, tours and a celebration of French culture. The Festival commences on Friday with a free conference at Mary Immaculate College featuring some of the best experts on the history of the Wild Geese and of the Irish migrants in early modern Europe.
Limerick camogie player Caoimhe Costelloe and Clare senior hurler Diarmuid Ryan have been announced as the 2022 MIC GPA Scholarship awardees. Now in its second year, the MIC GPA Scholarship scheme is a collaboration between Mary Immaculate College (MIC) and the Gaelic Players Association (GPA), and is open to GPA members who have applied for and are successful in securing a place on MIC’s postgraduate programmes in education and the liberal arts. Two scholarships are offered on an annual basis.

Held for the 12th time this year, the League of Legends soccer blitz saw over 130 boys and girls from eight Limerick city primary schools tog out for a highly competitive day of soccer. The annual tournament is a joint venture between the Transforming Education through Dialogue (TED) project, an MIC initiative with primary and post-primary schools, and the PLUS schools network comprising representatives from fourteen local schools. Based within the Curriculum Development Unit at MIC, TED engages with the schools in activities and programmes throughout the school year.
Manchester United may have beaten Manchester City to the FA Cup at the weekend but all eyes were on Mary Immaculate College on Thursday 23 May where a riveting local school derby was playing out. Held for the thirteenth time this year, the League of Legends soccer blitz saw over 160 Fifth and Sixth Class students from 13 local primary schools tog out for a highly competitive day of soccer. The competition is a joint venture between the Transforming Education through Dialogue (TED) Project)—an MIC initiative that works directly with primary and post-primary schools—and the PLUS schools network comprising representatives from fourteen local DEIS schools.
Over 2,300 students from across the MidWest participated in Limerick Science Week, co-hosted by MIC, UL and TUS. This year's festival celebrated 'Being Human' and presented a range of activities and experiences to celebrate the role of science and STEM in the lives of people in the Mid-West region. MIC's Department of STEM Education was awarded €12,000 in funding by Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) to support their role in the Festival.
