Seeing Stem Photo Competition

Using photography to capture science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) encourages creative thinking and begins to integrate Art with STEM. From a water drop to a rainbow, from a shadow to a shape, from your home to the world…take time to see science, technology, engineering and mathematics in your everyday life. This photo competition welcomes all primary and secondary students to capture a moment of STEM and share with others.

Who can Apply?

There are 4 categories of entrants:

  • Primary - Junior (Infants-2nd class)
  • Primary - Senior (3rd-6th class)
  • Secondary (1st-3rd year)
  • Secondary (TY-6th Year)

What’s the Prize?

A Shaw Scientific prize for your class (value €100)

Deadline for Entries

All entries must be submitted by Friday 18 November 2022 (Science Week).  

  • Each contestant may submit a maximum of three photos for judging by sending to: stemphoto@mic.ul.ie
  • You can send any photo that demonstrates, communicates or explains a scientific, technological, engineering, or mathematical concept or phenomenon.
  • The contestant must briefly describe the concept or phenomenon associated with each photo (more details below).

What to include with your submission:

  • Specify your entry category in the email subject line
  • Name and surname
  • Age
  • Name of your school
  • Class level
  • Title / caption of the photograph
  • Brief ‘plain language’ description of the science/technology/engineering/mathematics concept or phenomena depicted in the photo. The explanation should be understandable for youth and the public (maximum 50 words).

All entries must be submitted by Friday 18 November 2022 (Science Week).

The submitted photos will be evaluated anonymously by a jury comprised of pre-service teachers and STEM educators in Mary Immaculate College.

Entries will be judged (in an age-appropriate manner) on:

  • Originality: creativity of the photo and/or photographic technique
  • Informational content: effectiveness at communicating the phenomenon or concept
  • Artistic and Visual Impact: aesthetic quality, visual and emotional appeal
