STEM Initiatives and Case Studies
MIC is committed to providing STEM teaching and learning experiences informed by evidence based research, by working with teachers, students, the general public & key stakeholders in the field of STEM.
This work places a strong emphasis on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) allowing children, teachers and the general public to see an experimental world where everything they encounter can be subject to scientific exploration.
As a result we have engaged in a number of research projects and developed programmes and outreach activities which provide opportunities for all participants to embrace innovation, enhance creativity and develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

CRAFT Maker Space
Work is also due to begin shortly on the CRAFT Maker Space at MIC.
CRAFT (Creative Arts Future Technologies) will be an exciting addition to the Mary Immaculate estate which aims to demystify and to catalyse the public’s engagement with STEAM through a variety of outreach activities for families that focus on building creativity, innovation and STEAM skills for life.
The CRAFT Maker Space will provide opportunities for a general audience to learn how science is practiced, to understand the role of science in society, and to make informed decisions about science-related issues in people’s daily lives. All activities will promote an awareness of the importance of STEAM skills and related careers and the impact, knowledge and practice of STEAM skills has on the economy, society and everyday life.
Development works on the CRAFT Maker Space will begin in early 2021 with the venue launching summer 2021. Once open, STEAM workshops for children and families will run monthly throughout the year with summer camps for children taking place during the school holidays.
Other activities in the CRAFT Maker Space will include performances, recitals, art exhibitions, public seminars and talks.
