A volume of essays on the regional history of the mid-west has been written in honour of Dr Liam Irwin, the former Head of the Department of History at Mary Immaculate College.

Co-authored by current MIC History Department lecturer Dr Catherine Swift, the book was launched last week by Bishop Emeritus John Fleming. Limestone and River: Essays on Thomond history in honour of Liam is a series of essays on the history of Limerick city and the surrounding areas, put together by friends and admirers of Liam during his 40 year tenure as a leading figure within the Thomond Archaeological and History Society (TAHS).

The book was in the works for several years after being delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Alongside Catherine, the book was co-authored by historians, Brian Hodkinson and Tom Donovan.

Speaking about the launch, Catherine said: “It was a great celebration, both of Liam Irwin and his impact on the historical profession but also of our history and strong sense of place in north Munster. The Thomond Society have been promoting study of our heritage in all its forms since the nineteenth century days of the Limerick Field Club and their initiative in sponsoring this collection of essays marks their commitment to the field as much as Liam’s”.

The launch of the book took place in Limerick Protestant Young Men's Association building, the original building in which (what is now) the Thomond Archaeological and Historical Society first began, and it is the society that have produced this volume of essays in conjunction with Four Courts Press.

The volume of essays will be in the shops in the coming week.
