The Story Behind Its Landmarks: Exploring Limerick

12 March 2025
Limerick A collection of moments from life here in Limerick

Limerick may not be the biggest city, but it’s packed with hidden gems just waiting to be discovered. Its rich history is woven into the very streets, and you don’t have to search far to find it. A walk by the stunning Shannon River will bring you face-to-face with some of Limerick’s most famous landmarks, many of which are practically right at your feet.

castle King John's Castle

Start your adventure at King John’s Castle, built in the 13th century. It’s right by the River Shannon and is one of the most famous landmarks in the city. Here’s a fun little fact: even though it’s named after King John of England (yes, the one behind the Magna Carta!), he never actually lived here. The castle was built during his reign as a stronghold, but it was never meant to be a royal home. These days, it’s a perfect spot for a walk or to just sit and enjoy the view. It’s a great way to connect with the past while enjoying the present!

As you walk along Clancy’s Strand, not only will you get a perfect view of the castle, but you’ll also come across something truly special: the Treaty Stone. This isn’t just any stone—it marks the spot where the 1691 Treaty of Limerick was signed, ending the Williamite War in Ireland. It’s a symbol of peace after years of conflict and an important part of Irish history.

Cross the beautiful Thomond Bridge, and you’ll be back by the castle. Keep walking down the street, and you’ll find yourself surrounded by cozy pubs and lovely cafes. A little further on, you’ll reach St. Mary’s Cathedral, one of the oldest buildings in Limerick. It’s been around since 1168, and it’s seen it all—wars, repairs, and more. The cathedral has stood the test of time, and today, it’s a symbol of the strength and spirit of Limerick.

If you’re still up for a longer walk, keep going across the river, and you’ll find the Worker’s Memorial Statue. This bronze statue stands proudly by the Shannon River, honoring the hardworking people who helped build Limerick’s industrial past. The river was a key part of their work, and this statue reminds us of their dedication and strength. It’s a quiet but powerful tribute to the people who shaped the city we see today.

Limerick is the perfect place for a walk that’s both good for your health and great for your soul. You can take in fresh air, enjoy the views, and learn a little about the city’s history all at the same time. And on a sunny day (if you're lucky enough), there’s no better way to experience it: walking by the river, soaking up the beauty around you, and maybe even listening to The Right Time by The Corrs. It’s as authentic an Irish experience as you can get.
