Fees

Details of tax relief for qualifying fees are listed under the ‘Tax Relief for Tuition Fees Overview’ section below.

Understanding Undergraduate Course Fees

Fees are broadly categorised as:

EU (paid by EU nationals with EU birth certificate or passport)

Non-EU (those who are residents outside the European Union)

Fees are comprised of three elements:

  • Tuition fees - Varies per course
  • Student Contribution Charge - €3,000
  • College Levies – Varies per course

1. Tuition fee

Tuition fees may be paid on your behalf by the Irish Government (HEA) under the Free Fees Initiative scheme. Details of the eligibility criteria are listed here.

2. Student contribution charge (SCC)

This is payable by you or if you are deemed eligible for a SUSI grant, Mary Immaculate College will invoice SUSI for your SCC. This SUSI grant is means tested and you can apply for this online. Visit the SUSI website for further information.

When completing your online registration with Mary Immaculate College you will be asked if you have applied for a grant and will be required to enter your SUSI application number.

3. Student Levies

Student levies vary per undergraduate course. Levies are payable by all students and are not covered by a SUSI grant or government funding. Please visit www.mic.ul.ie/fees for specific levies relating to your course.

Postgraduate course fees for academic year 24/25 New Incoming Students

Postgraduate course fees for academic year 24/25 Returning Students (Note: Returning students will be liable for new fees from 25/26 onwards)

Details of tax relief for qualifying fees are listed under the ‘Tax Relief for Tuition Fees Overview’ section below.

  • Payment deadline of course fees for all Undergraduate students and all Postgraduate students is 13 September 2024.

Students may be eligible to pay fees in two instalments.

  • Payment deadline for first instalment of course fees is 13 September 2024
  • Payment deadline for second instalment of course fees is 13 January 2025

Payment of fees by instalments within fee payment deadlines (Final payment 13 January 2025)

Once an initial payment has been made, students can continue to pay by instalment through their Student Portal between September and the final payment due date 13 January 2025, without signing up to a payment plan. There is no charge for this option but all fees must be paid in full by the 13 January 2025 due date. Failure to pay by this date will result in the withholding of semester 1 exam results.

Enrolment on Payment Plan (Extension to 30 April 2025)

A Payment plan schedule splits the Tuition / Student Contribution element of the fees monthly over the academic year, September to end of April. (Levies are NOT included in a payment plan) There is a €50 charge for this option, payable with your 1st instalment.

If you have previously studied at another third level institution prior to MIC, this may affect your eligibility for the HEA Free Fees Initiative.

To determine your eligibility for the HEA Free Fees Initiative, please advise the relevant institution to fill out the attached Declaration Form and return it to MIC Student Fees Office via email StudentFees@mic.ul.ie,  (a photograph will suffice).

Download MIC Student Fee Declaration Form.

You can claim tax relief on qualifying fees (including the student contribution fee) that you have paid for third level education courses. The qualifying fees must be paid for an approved course at an approved college.

Other charges and levies do not qualify for relief.

You may be the student, or you may pay the fees on the student's behalf. However, you can only claim the relief if you are the person who actually paid the fees.

The Revenue Commissioners allow a maximum claim per course, per person, per academic year. Also, each claim is subject to a single disregard amount in each tax year.

The maximum amount you can claim is €7,000 per course, per person, per academic year. Each claim is subject to a single disregard amount of €3,000 for fulltime programmes or €1,500 for part-time programmes each tax year. If you have paid fees for more than one student, this disregard amount will only be deducted from your claim once.

To qualify for relief for postgraduate courses, you must already have an undergraduate degree or equivalent qualification. A postgraduate course must be of a duration of at least one academic year but no longer than four academic years.

Please visit the Revenue Commissioners website for further information and application details.

Undergraduate Students

I am entering the College for the first time, how do I tell the College I have applied for a SUSI grant?

Students will be invited as part of their online enrolment process to declare if they have applied for a SUSI grant. You will be asked to supply a valid SUSI application number. SUSI do not cover College Levies and you must pay these during your online enrolment process. SUSI will confirm your awarded grant with MIC in the coming weeks and your account will be updated accordingly.

I have applied to SUSI but don’t know if my award has been successful or not, do I still have to pay the Student Contribution Fee?

Students who supply a valid SUSI application number during their registration will be given a period of grace until the end of week four of term, for payment of the Student Contribution Fee (€3,000 subject to change). Students confirmed by SUSI by week four, are not liable for the amount awarded. Should SUSI have not confirmed to the College your award by week four, you are advised to pay the 1st instalment of course fees once your account is updated by MIC. SUSI do not cover College Levies and you must pay these during your online registration process.

I got the SUSI grant last year, will the College know I am getting it again this year?

Students are invited to complete online enrolment with the College each year. During this process you will be asked to confirm your SUSI application number. You will then be given the same period of grace until the end of week four for SUSI to confirm your grant. MIC will be confirming all student’s registration with SUSI once module registration is closed at the end of week 1 of each Semester. Once MIC receive validation of your award from SUSI, it will be applied to your account. SUSI do not cover College Levies and you must pay these during your online registration process.

I am appealing my grant status with SUSI, do I still have to pay while under appeal?

If you are in an appeal process with SUSI, you are advised to make payments towards your Student Contribution Fee. Should SUSI later grant your appeal, you will be refunded any overpayment made. You are advised to inform the Student Fees Office of any appeal process and a payment plan arrangement can be put in place until you receive your appeal decision. For further details please refer to Payment Plan Terms & Conditions on the MIC Fees Regulations. Students run the risk of having their examination results blocked if they haven’t entered into an arrangement with the Student Fees Office.

What if I have already paid my fees and I am subsequently awarded a grant?

Any refund due will be issued to you once MIC receive confirmation from SUSI of your award via a Validation file or a Reconciliation file.

Who is eligible for a Compulsory Field Trip Grant?

  • Students qualifying for a maintenance grant
  • Students holding Back to Education allowance for a fee only grant
  • Tuition students qualifying for a fee only grant under the current year’s Student Grant Scheme for attendance on an approved undergraduate course in the state.
  • Postgraduate students on a special rate

Postgraduate Students

Your course fee liability will be generated in full. Once MIC receive validation of your award from SUSI, this value will be allocated to your account. You are advised to pay full course fees by the prescribed payment dates until the College has adjusted your Student Fee account with your award. Any overpayment will be refunded to you. Application for a SUSI grant may not cover acceptance fees. SUSI do not cover College Levies and you must pay these during your online registration process. You the student and MIC are required to disclose to Student Universal Support Ireland (SUSI) all funding provided by the College or external bodies to students that have applied for a SUSI grant. Depending on the type of funding granted to students, SUSI may include it as reckonable income in their determination of SUSI grants.

  • Students who are in receipt of Maintenance Payments from SUSI need to have their Registration/Confirmation of Attendance fully complete prior to receiving their SUSI maintenance grant payment. Students need to ensure to select the Complete Button at the end of their Registration/Confirmation of Attendance task for it to be fully complete. It is advisable for students to check their task completion status on their MIC Student Portal.
  • MIC will confirm with SUSI students’ registration each week after students fully complete their Registration/Confirmation of Attendance task on their MIC Student Portal.
  • Students will receive their SUSI maintenance grant payment the following week after registration is confirmed by MIC to SUSI. SUSI pay the maintenance grant payment directly to the student.
  • SUSI will also require confirmation for Semester 2. Therefore, students will need to fully complete their Confirmation of Attendance task in Semester 2, January 2025 and the same process will continue.
  • SUSI do not cover any college levies for any student, the student will need to clear these at the time of Registration/Confirmation of Attendance.
  • SUSI will pay the college the Student Contribution and/or fees, Postgraduate fees element directly to the college.
