Uncertain Times
The late 1980s were difficult and uncertain years for the College. A sharp decline in the Irish birth rate resulted in a significant drop in pupil enrolment in primary schools with a consequent drop in demand for primary teachers.
Student intake numbers to the B Ed programme in 1989 had more than halved on the previous year.
However, undaunted by shrinking numbers and the shadow of lower entry standards, the College, with the full support of concerned staff, surged forward to meet the challenge that faced it. After lengthy consideration by the various College Boards, it was agreed that the time had come for diversification, essential, not only for survival, but also for new life.
