Professor Peadar Cremin
Professor Peadar Cremin appointed as the first lay President of the College in 101 years.
A native of Kerry, Prof. Cremin joined MIC in 1976 as a lecturer in the Education Department. From 1978 to 1998, he lectured in Social and Environmental Studies and was responsible for the organisation of Teaching Practice. From 1994 to 1999, he was the Acting Head of Education. Over the term of his presidency, the College community expanded dramatically. By the time of his retirement in 2011, over 3,000 students were enrolled on 30 different academic programmes at undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral levels.
The College also witnessed unprecedented physical growth and development under his tenure, with the completion of a major capital investment programme to a total of €40 million, which enabled the complete reshaping and development of the campus, including the construction of two state-of-the-art buildings, Tailteann and Teamhair/TARA. Sadly, Professor Cremin passed away in November 2015 following a short illness.
Today, the College honours his legacy with the Peadar Cremin Fellowship, awarded on an annual basis to a graduate for achieving first place in Educational Research and the Dissertation on the Bachelor of Education (Primary Teaching) programme.
