Partnership with the University of Limerick
MIC enters into partnership with the University of Limerick, which became its new accrediting body.
1 November 1991, the Minister for Education, Mary O’Rourke, announces that “agreement has been reached between the authorities of Mary Immaculate College, Limerick, and the University of Limerick on new and dynamic linkages between the two institutions” (Department of Education Press Release).
According to the Memorandum, the University of Limerick (UL) would accredit programmes at university level in Mary Immaculate College; there would be cross representation on the UL governing body and the Bord Ríalaithe of the College and on the Academic Council of UL and the Bord Acadúil of the College. Members of the Education Department of Mary Immaculate would become members of the Education Faculty Board of the University and members of the Arts Departments of Mary Immaculate College would become members of the Humanities Faculty Board of the University. In line with university practice, Mary Immaculate College changed the traditional structure of its academic year to a trimesterised, modularised system, and later in accordance with the University’s decision regarding its calendar, to a semester system.
