Introduction of Gaeilge as a subject
While the language had its place in college life, there was no official recognition of its place in Irish education.
Even though a number of students were from Gaeltacht areas and, on completing their course in the College, would return there to teach their Irish-speaking pupils.
In 1904, due to pressure from Conradh na Gaeilge and other organisations, a bilingual programme for primary schools was introduced and Irish became an examination subject for trainee teachers.
