Office of the Registrar

About

The Registrar of Mary Immaculate College, known as the Vice President - Academic Affairs, reports directly to the President, is the senior academic officer and assumes responsibility for all matters pertaining to the academic function of MIC. The current VPAA is Prof. Niamh Hourigan. She is assisted in the role by the Assistant Registrar, Dr Patrick Connolly, and the staff of Student Academic Administration (SAA).

Responsibilities of the Registrar

Specific responsibilities of the Registrar / Vice President - Academic Affairs include:

  • Establishment and promotion of the highest academic standards;
  • Development, implementation and monitoring of policies for maintaining the intellectual quality of the College;
  • Fostering of an environment which promotes excellence in teaching and research;
  • Liaising with senior academic faculty to define long-term academic goals and strategies for their attainment;
  • Overseeing the operation of the Student Academic Administration (SAA) which deals with the following:
  1. Student Applications
  2. Admissions and Registration
  3. Timetabling of classes and examinations
  4. Processing examination results and managing grading meetings
  5. Graduation
  • Contributing, in co-operation with other senior members of College management, to the overall effective management of the College;
  • Liaising with the University of Limerick in relation to academic matters and the academic relationship between the College and the University;
  • Participating in negotiations with external agencies, national and international, such as the Department of Education and Science, the Higher Education Authority, the Central Applications Office, and other Third-Level institutions in order to promote the College's interests and the academic quality of the institution;
  • Liaising with the Vice-President, Administration and Finance to ensure that the academic mission is fully reflected in decisions related to finance and physical development;
  • Assuming, in the absence of the President, the responsibilities of Acting President.
