Would you like to know what it's like to be a student at Mary Immaculate College (MIC)? Then the MIC Student Experience Days are not to be missed! This April and May we will open our campuses in Thurles and Limerick to prospective students who would like to get a sense of what it's like to be an MIC student.

The MIC Thurles Student Experience Day will take place on Saturday 13 April from 9.30am-2.30pm, followed by the MIC Limerick Student Experience Day on Thursday 2 May from 10am-1pm. Both events are an excellent opportunity for prospective students, parents/guardians and guidance counsellors to explore our campuses in Limerick and Thurles, and hear first-hand from our students about what it's like to study at MIC.

According to Dr Patrick Cosgrove, MIC’s Student Recruitment Officer"The MIC Student Experience Days are must attend events for Leaving Certificate students considering their CAO choices, mature applicants hoping to return to education, or transition year and fifth year students who are looking ahead to third-level. Current MIC students will be sharing their experiences of student life and they’ll be answering all your questions, so this is the perfect opportunity for you to hear first-hand from those in the know – our current college students."

He added: "You’ll get to learn more about our range of undergraduate degrees, including our brand-new BA in English Language and Literature, and BA in Drama and English. You’ll also hear about our many student supports, and life outside lectures, including clubs and societies and the student scene in Limerick city and Thurles town."

The MIC Thurles Student Experience Day on Saturday 13 April (9.30am-2.30pm) is definitely one for the diary for anyone interested in a career as a post-primary teacher. On the day, prospective students will get to experience taster lectures in the subjects offered at MIC Thurles, including Home Economics, Mathematics, Gaeilge, Accounting, Business Studies and Religious Studies. A panel discussion and Q&A session with current student sharing their experiences of student life at MIC Thurles will take place at various times throughout the day. There will also be student-led campus tours and lecturers will be on-hand to answer any questions attendees might have about MIC’s post-primary teaching degrees.

Eleanor Haughey from Donegal who is currently studying to become a Mathematics and Gaeilge post-primary teacher at MIC Thurles recalls her experience of attending the MIC Thurles Student Experience Day back when she was a Leaving Certificate student. She says: "The Student Experience Day was great because first of all you got to see the College first-hand. You were brought into the lecture rooms where you will be sitting doing your lectures and you got introduced to all the different lecturers who gave a great run down on what was involved in each subject. I was mainly interested in Mathematics and Gaeilge but I got to hear about all the other subjects as well and it was great to hear all about what I’d be studying. I got to meet MIC Thurles students as well who all spoke so highly of the College and of the programme so that really made me certain that the BA in Education, Mathematics and Gaeilge was the right degree for me."

The MIC Limerick Student Experience Day on Thursday 2 May (10am-1pm) will feature a panel discussion with current MIC students who will be joined on the stage of the Lime Tree Theatre by Cillian O’Callaghan, President of MIC’s Students’ Union, MISU. Cillian and current students will be sharing their experiences of student life at our Limerick campus, and will be discussing everything from the transition to third-level from secondary school, how to strike the right balance between studying and socialising, where to turn to for support, and why MIC was the right choice for them.

Speaking ahead of the event, Cillian says: "I’m really looking forward to sharing my experience of student life here at MIC with prospective students. I was just like you only a few years ago – thinking about where I would study and what I wanted to study. I’m really glad that I made the decision to come to MIC so come along to the MIC Limerick Student Experience Day to hear why I chose MIC and what student life is like here at our Limerick campus. It will be a great way for you to learn about MIC and all that we have to offer."

According to Wayne Gill from Waterford who will be speaking at the event and who is now in his final year of the BA in Early Childhood Care and Education programme at MIC Limerick, "Being a student at MIC is great! The people are so nice. You make so many new friends. The College isn’t too big but it’s not too small either so you still get the full college experience. The lecturers are so helpful and so kind and they’ve just made the four years of my programme extremely easy."

He advises anyone thinking of studying at MIC to come along to the MIC Student Experience Days and says: "The Student Experience Days will help you get a feel for the College and the community here. The atmosphere around the place is electric. It’s unbelievable!"

In addition to the panel discussion, student-led campus tours will also take place and there will be an array of information stands where attendees can find out further information about MIC’s undergraduate degrees in Drama, English, Psychology, Liberal Arts, Early Childhood Care and Education, and Primary Teaching. They can also learn more about the range of undergraduate scholarships on offer at MIC for incoming students, such as the our Elite Sports Scholarships, Entrance Scholarships, the Ashling Murphy Memorial Entrance Scholarship and University of Sanctuary Scholarships, as well as MIC’s CAO Points Concession Sports Scheme.
